All of our retaining wall designs are based on the on the 2012 International Residential Code and the  Virginia Uniform Statewide Building Code (USBC). There are 3 main types of retaining walls  gravity, anchored, and cantilevered.

Cantilevered Retaining Walls

The cantilevered retaining wall is the most conventional type of wall we build. The Fairfax County retaining  wall detail for 2-4 foot masonry walls, is in fact a  cantilevered retaining wall. Cantilevered retaining walls can be constructed using ether reinforced concrete or cinder block.

 Gravity Retaining Walls

The best example of a gravity retaining wall is a segmental concrete block wall. This type of retaining wall is built without mortar, and is held up by the use of a drainage system behind the wall. As hydrostatic pressure is exerted towards the retaining wall, a layer of #57 behind the wall diverts the water pressure, and gravity pulls the ground water to a drainage system.

Anchored Retaining Wall

The Anchored Retaining wall system is a typical pressure treated wood retaining wall as laid out in the Fairfax County details. This type of   retaining wall is supported with a system of deadmen that anchors the retaining wall. These deadmen are placed at 8 feet on center and support the wall by anchoring it to the soil behind the wall.
