Carport Footings And Concrete Slab
When Ms. Utilities has been contacted for utility marking and your carport permit has been issued we can start construction. The first step is to excavate and grade the area where the new carport is going to be constructed. We will then excavate the footings, which are typically dug to 24 inches in depth. There are however exceptions to the rules, if your property is located in a area that is deemed to be a problem small area, a engineer may be required to modify these general specifications for carport foundation. There are two methods to construct a carport foundation, one is to excavate to the proper depth and install to #rebar set 6 inches above the bottom of the footing. Then the footing is filled with 1 foot of 3000 PSI concrete at 28 days. From this point, we will then block up using cinderblock to height above grade. The second method to construct your carport foundation, is to excavate, install the rebar, and prepare the actual carport concrete slab all in one pour. A carport concrete slab is typically 3 ½ inches thick, and graded sloped to the driveway, so that water does not collect in the carport. In the preparation of your carports concrete slab, typically 4 inches of gravel is compacted below the actual slab, and is reinforced with welded wire. You may want to consider, adding a vapor barrier, so if in the future, you decide to convert your carport into a garage, the foundation will be suitable for such transformation. Whatever putting design you decide to use your carport construction, County inspector will need to verify the depth and width of the footing, proper placement of rebar, and if poured monolithically the slab preparation. If you decide upon utilizing pouring the footing first, we will have the footing inspected, and then we can block up using cinderblock to the desired height. Utilizing this method, a second inspection will be needed for the slab itself once it has been prepared. Typically, a carport’s concrete slab is a hand troweled smooth finish, we don’t recommend a machined finished concrete slab because it can be quite slick. If you decide to remove your existing driveway, we may pour the slab and footing for your carport, along with the driveway on the same day.
